Darrel Gene Melvin

Services for Capt. Darrel Gene Melvin will take place Thursday at 11 a.m., at First Baptist Church in Carlsbad, N.M. with burial ceremonies to follow in the City of Carlsbad Cemetery. Darrel passed away Friday morning after a valiant and courageous struggle with Parkinson's Disease. His peaceful death came with his wife and two children by his side.

Darrel was preceeded in death by his father, Roscoe Melvin.

Darrel leaves behind a loving wife, Doris Melvin of Lubbock, Texas and mother, Ramona Melvin of Carlsbad, N.M.; a daughter, Michelle Melvin of Lubbock, Texas; a son, Kelly Melvin and wife Cheryl of Green River; grandsons; Andrew Melvin, Garrett Melvin, Chase Baumfalk, Hunter Casper; granddaughters, Kayla Magrath and husband Kayne; Taylor Christensen; Sadie Casper; and a great-grandson, Peyton Melvin. He is also survived by his brother and two sisters; Mark Melvin, Beckie Melvin and Teresa Nance.

Darrel retired with 22 of service in the Wyoming Army National Guard, retiring as the Company Commander of B Battery, 3rd Battalion of the 49th Field Artillery.

He also retired as a mine safety professional at Tenneco and Solvay Minerals and served as the mine rescue trainer during that time.

An active community servant, Darrel volunteered with the Boy Scouts Troop 1, Cub Scout Pack 11, Cub Scout Pact 312 and most recently Boy Scout Troop 312.

He was also a member of Flaming Gorge Baptist Church, Hilltop Baptist Church and served as a deacon.

Darrel was an outdoorsman, racing enthusiast, craftsman of wood and steel and loved being with his family.
