It was quite the finish to last weekends Warrior Classic in Grand Junction, Colo.
Going into the final match of the tournament, the Green River High School wrestling team was third out of 35 teams that featured schools from Colorado, Utah, and Arizona.
A 4-3 win by Green River’s Jordan Tucker propelled the Wolves into second place ahead of Paoina High School (Colo.).
“It was a good reward for the wrestlers to place second in a tournament like this, they have been working hard. We aren’t at the point where we can put four or five in the finals of a tournament of this caliber so most of the points had to come from fighting through the consolation side and getting pins and that’s just what they did, I am proud of them,” head coach Marshall Rhodes said.
Rhodes said senior Cole Verner had a great tournament and was the lone champion for Green River.
He said Cyro Montoya lost a tough match in the semifinals, but came back and got third, and added Colton Hopkins and Hunter Hanks wrestled well and both placed fourth.
Shandon Welsh and Jordan Tucker placed fifth, Chase O’Melia and Brendan Hopkins were both sixth.
Rhodes said Nathan McCann, Gage Byers, Austin Waters, Caleb Lawson, Blake Waite, and Edgar Alatorre all competed hard but came up short of placing in the top six.
The Green River High School squad will not compete again until next month.
Rhodes said the team has things to fix and their conditioning must improve before they compete again.
