Lincoln team finishes unbeaten

It was quite an end to the basketball season for the Lincoln Middle School eighth grade basketball team.

Much like they had in football, the eighth grade “A” team finished the season undefeated and did so in thrilling fashion with a win over rival Rock Springs Junior High.

After defeating the Jaguars the first two times this season, Green River’s bid at a sweep looked like it was in jeopardy during the season’s finale at a tournament in Evanston.

Head coach Bernie Witte said the team was trailing by five points with 13 seconds left when they were able to connect on two late three pointers. He said they hit one with 13 seconds left and then after Rock Springs hit one out of two free throws, they were able to tie the game and send it into sudden death after hitting another three pointer with two seconds left.

“What a fantastic ending,” Witte said.

The longtime Green River coach said that Rock Springs was a very good team and he didn’t think he could remember a finish like that as a coach.

Looking back at the season, Witte said the team was a great group of hard working kids.

He said the members of the team play a lot of basketball all season long and they look to have a pretty bright future.

Witte said he hopes to see some of them playing on the varsity level in a few years.

“They are just really good kids, not just basketball players. They are a lot of fun to be around,” he said.

Witte said it is the first eighth grade team to go undefeated since 2004.

Members of the 2014 Lincoln eighth grade team were Austin Anderson, Jarrett Atkins, Grant Cobb, Haden Counts, Joshua Cudney, Nick Findlow, Justin Flores, Erik Gwaltney, Jared Harmon, Lane Hutchinson, Kyle Ivie, Josh Mattson, Anthony Mitchell, Mason Oyler, Chance Santhuff, Dallan Serrano, Chase Stoeger, Hunter Stojadinovic, A.J. Vergara, Connar Wilins and Braxton Yeager.

The manager of the team were Kasidee Brewer, Rochelle Gardea, and Derica Wingard. The coaches were Witte and Andy Trumble.
