The Green River High School girl’s basketball team will look to get their first win of the season Thursday afternoon at the 20th annual Flaming Gorge Classic.
The Lady Wolves will open the three-day tournament at 4:20 p.m. against Kemmerer High School.
Green River will play Manilla (Utah) Friday at 6 p.m. and Mountain View Saturday at 4:50 p.m.
Senior Kasey Turnbull said she’s excited for the Flaming Gorge Classic and it will be nice to play three straight home games.
“It’s fun playing on your home court and having that many people their,” she said.
New head coach Aric Hanusa said if the team can execute it’s game plan well, they should be in a good position in all three games.
Green River opened the 2014-15 season with a 63-26 loss to Star Valley.
Turnbull said it was nice to get the first game out of the way. She led the team with 13 points. Sophomore Taylor Stoeger added 11 and junior Averee Cobb rounded out the scoring for Green River with two points.
“It was good for everyone to get their jitters out. Then we can relax and figure out what we need to do to improve,” Turnbull said.
Going into the game against Star Valley, Hanusa said the number one point of emphasis was limiting turnovers and they did not do a good job in the opener.
“We turned it over more than we wanted to in our first game,” he said. “We’re going to move forward and learn from it. We’re going to get better. We have to address the turnovers or it’s going to be a really long year.”
Hanusa was pleased with the play of Turnbull and Stoeger, who both ended up in double figures and said they have done a great job with leadership.
He said he’s not worried about finding a third and fourth scores, that will come in the future with time as the teams confidence grows.
“We are a team and we are still working on things,” he said.
