The Green River High School wrestling team had eight individual champions on their way to a team title last Saturday at the Evanston Invite.
Green River placed first out of 14 teams from Utah, Nevada, and Wyoming with a total of 258.5 points. The field included conference opponents Evanston, Riverton, and Rock Springs.
“I am proud of our wrestlers and how they competed, it has been a long time since Green River has won this tournament. We have many things to work on now so this was a productive weekend. I watched the wrestlers improve from match to match and that is exciting, if we can continue to do that it will be a successful season,” head coach Marshall Rhodes said.
Cyro Montoya, Cole Verner, Gage Byers, Shandon Welsh, Hunter Hanks, Brendan Hopkins, and Jordan Tucker all finished on top for Green River.
Cole Verner won the outstanding wrestler award for the tournament. Nathan McCann made the finals and finished second. Chase O’Melia, Colton Hopkins, and Austin Waters finished third. Kole Case and Eric Clingenpeel were fourth, Blake Waite was fifth, and Kaycee Cochrane was sixth. Zach Orr also made a step up from last year and competed in the varsity division, but did not place.
Nine Wolves were entered in the junior varsity division and Rhodes said they had a great showing. Caleb Nathan was the champion at 106 pounds with Dan Mondragon finishing fourth in the same weight class. Derrik Erickson and James McCarter finished third, Talbert Bowen and Hunter Arvig finished fourth, and Chance Anderson won four matches on his way to a fifth place finish. Rhodes said Devon VanValkenburg and Gabe Bunderman also competed and got some great experience but did not place this week.
This week the team will travel to compete in Colorado.
“I look forward to a good week of practice to fix some things, get in better shape, and then go compete in Grand Junction and Fruita next weekend,” Rhodes said.
