It happens every year.
Daylight savings rolls around and makes it dark earlier.
With the onset of the darkness, I sink it to a small depression that won’t subside until it’s light again as I make my way home. There is just something super wrong about getting done with a stressful day at the office and it being dark. There is no fun in that.
Don’t get me wrong, I love living in Wyoming, but truth be told I have never been a fan of winter and some of the things that come with.
While a lot of people I know have fun in the outdoors on snow machines or skiing down a majestic slope, I stay inside to hibernate, only venturing out when I absolutely have to.
My trips are combined. I will try and do everything I need to on a Friday night, so that way I don’t have to leave the house all weekend.
Along with the darkness, there are a variety of other things that just make me down in the dumps. I’m not talking about a serious case of crippling depression, but it’s enough that their is a marked change is my demeanor as I patiently await the warmth.
Luckily, this year has been a pretty tame winter and as I write this it is pretty nice outside, but there was the one week of absolute frigid below-zero temperatures, followed by a week of wind strong enough to blow a cow to Nebraska.
It’s not that it’s always that cold in Wyoming, but the wind can drop the temperature enough to turn 30 degrees into an absolute nightmare.
The driving is another thing I can absolutely deal without. There are a lot of trucks and SUV’s around that have four-wheel drive and this is a boon for icy and snowy conditions.
The problem is, people around here think that because they have four-wheel drive they can go 100 mph down Interstate 80 when its snowing with no problem at all, when this is just not the case.
It’s usually the crazy people blowing by me at triple digits that I find along the side of the road minutes later.
If the department of transportation decides to switch the variable speed limit to 55, there probably doing it for a good reason, not as a suggestion.
Getting somewhere five minutes later than normal probably wouldn’t hurt anything. If your that late somewhere to begin with, think about leaving earlier.
Another one of the worst things about the winter months is the sickness that spreads around everywhere.
It goes from school to houses, from workplaces to houses and vice versa.
Usually I don’t get it to bad, but this winter has already been a real pain in the butt.
The other night I was peacefully trying to fall asleep when it happened. I was feeling perfectly fine, ready for slumber when without warning, my body told me it needed to evacuate some of its contents.
It had been a while since I had the flu or any kind of food poisoning, so throwing up, which is never fun, was even worse.
Then things took a drastic turn for the worse. My body decided that the vomiting was not enough, it was time to let it go from down below.
I had always heard about it, but had never been in this predicament, nor do I ever want to again. It was an awkward few minutes that I hope don’t happen for a long time.
I spent the next few hours repeating the same verse over and over as if it was some horrible Taylor Swift song I heard on the radio and couldn’t get out of my head.
The entire next day I moaned as if I was not going to live till 5 p.m.
I’m kind of a baby when I’m sick, but aren’t we all?
I know it’s not the most pleasant thing to talk about, but I think it’s happened to just about everyone, so people can understand where I’m coming from.
So as we creep to the new year, I’m excited for Spring to come, for the grass to get green, to barbecue and spend time outside, and to hopefully not spend anytime with a trash can.
