While most tend to visit the Sweetwater County Historical Museum to glimpse artifacts pertaining to the county’s history, visitors can also find unique and one-of- a-kind gifts within its gift shop.
According to Ruth Lauritzen, director of the museum, the gift shop supports three nonprofit organizations, the Sweetwater County Historical Museum Foundation, the county historical society and the county.
Which entity receives the profit depends on the items purchased.
A percentage of the book sales, for example, go to the historical foundation.
“The store is pretty much non-profit,” Lauritzen said.
She said the museum strives to keep its wares sourced locally, with many of the books sold in the shop from local authors or detailing area history. Other items, such as the new fused glass and mineral samples, come from local sources as well. Other things, such as the line of sauces and preserves, may not come from Sweetwater County, but come from other locations in Wyoming.
Lauritzen said one of the more popular items they carry are sage and juniper smudges. Smudges are bundles of dried plants often used in Native American rituals. They also carry items for kids, such as fossils, arrowheads and toys.
The store is open during the museum’s operating hours, which are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
