Winter practice underway at GRHS

The sounds of sneakers squeaking as they grazed against the gym floor could be heard Monday afternoon at Green River High School.

For the first time this season, the winter sports teams at the school were able to officially practice with the season set to begin next week.

Boy’s and girl’s basketball, boy’s swimming and wrestling teams will all take center stage till early March and the four state tournaments.

The Green River High School wrestling seeks a 12th state crown after finishing second at last year’s 4A State Tournament in Casper.

The boy’s basketball team will look for growth in year two under the direction of head coach Dan LaRose. The girl’s basketball team will have a new face on the sidelines for the 2014 season.

Aric Hanusa was hired earlier this summer to take over for Greg Butler who resigned after the 2013-14 season.

Prior to the accepting the position, Hanusa had spent the last two seasons as the head boy’s coach during his first year at Dubois.

When his team is on the floor, the new Lady Wolves coach said earlier this year that he has to see effort.

“We have to try our best, even if that means we don’t accomplish our goal. We are not going to make every shot, but you keep your head up and keep trying,” Hanusa said.

When the boy’s swim team practiced Monday, they were the first team at the high school to use the new aquatic center that opened two weeks ago.
