Library features holiday book tree

While a number of decorative Christmas trees are being placed for public display throughout Green River, the book tree at the Sweetwater County Library might be the most creative and unusual of the lot.

According to Sweetwater County Library Manager Jacquie Kramer, two youth services librarians, Becky Iwen and Misti Zimmerman, came across the tree idea while browsing Pintrest. The tree sounded like a great idea to Kramer, who said it fit in with the library's ongoing project to repurpose older and damaged books. Without projects like the book tree, many books owned by the library system would be sold or recycled at the end of their lifespans.

"We've been doing the altered books projects for a few years now," Kramer said.

Iwen said the tree consists of approximately 100 books and features decorations made from book pages. Iwen said the most time-consuming portion of building the tree was covering the books with green paper to make it more tree like. All in all, Iwen said the project took about four hours to complete the tree, which is more than six feet in height.

Iwen said the tree is one of the promotional displays they're featuring to get residents involved with the library system's winter reading programs. A youth program focusing on readers from birth to 18 years of age started Monday and concludes Jan. 31, while the adult program begins Jan. 5 and ends at the end of February.
