As was hinted at during a city council meeting last month, the Green River City Council voted to spend $20,000 to help fund the creation and placement of a statue.
The statue, titled “Shift Change,” will be placed in the city’s Mining Memorial Park on East Flaming Gorge Way. It was originally created by local artist Bryan Cordova as part of a competition. Cordova was announced the winner during Art on the Green in August and has resulted in the Green River Arts Council conducting a number of fundraising sales and events aimed at paying for the creation and placement of the bronze statue, which will be scaled at life size and a half.
Katie Duncombe, the parks and recreation department’s liaison to the arts council, the funding still leaves $40,000 for the arts council to raise. The contract approved Tuesday night states Cordova will sell the bronze work jointly to the city and Green River Community Chest for $96,500, with the $20,000 approved by the council going to Cordova as part of the total payment, with the remaining funds to be raised by the arts council.
According to information given to the city council, if all the funds are not raised by next summer, the project will remain in the works until it’s complete and the arts council won’t start additional projects until their funding goal is met. The arts council is selling bricks and pavers at the mining park, as well as maquettes through the Green River Community Chest to raise funds for the statue. Duncombe also said the council seeks donations from area businesses and residents.
The council also approved an agreement to sell Christmas tree ornaments featuring the “Shift Change” sculpture. According to council documents, the ornaments will be sold at the city, Golden Hour Senior Center, Sweetwater County Library and the Green River Chamber of Commerce.
