Wolves Nab Postseason Awards

Two Green River High School football players were recently recognized for their accolades during the 2014 season.

Junior quarterback and defensive back Tyler Vendetti was selected as Class 3A All State and also earned 3A West All-Conference honors.

Senior receiver, defensive back, kicker and punter Tanner Trumble also earned 3A West All-Conference honors.

The teams were named last week after a vote from the members of the Wyoming Coaches Association.

Starting for the second consecutive season at quarterback, Vendetti was third in the state in passing with 139 yards a game. He also had eight touchdown passes on the season. Vendetti finished third in the state in all-purposed yards with 206 yards a game and had six rushing touchdowns.

Green River head coach Don Maggi said yesterday that he was really proud of Vendetti for his play during the season.

“He’s a gym rat -- he does everything I’ve ever asked him to do and I ask the quarterbacks to do a lot,” he said.

Regardless of if he’s throwing during a winter practice, working hard during weight lifting session or staying after practice to go over a scheme, Maggi said Vendetti was always willing to work.

He said the junior play caller got thrown into the fire as a sophomore, but he learned on the fly and came back a much better player this year.

Maggi said during the 2014 season the game slowed down for Vendetti the decision making got easier.

He said that it will be exciting to have him back next season and because of his work ethic he is even going to improve further at the quarterback position.

“He’s set up for a successful senior season and we’re going to really rely on him,” Maggi said. “He’s fast and if he gets in space your not going to catch him ... His passing really developed and that’s attributed to his work ethic.”

Trumble was third in the state in receiving with 71 yards receiving a game. He finished 2014 with 43 receptions for 574 yards. He had three receiving touchdowns. The receiving numbers for his senior season set the all-time record for a single season at Green River High School.

He was also first in the state in kicking and fourth in punting.

As a receiver, Maggi said Trumble always had the opportunity to go up and get the ball.

“He’s a very competitive kid and a darn good athlete. He’s also got tremendous ball skills,” Maggi said.

If not for a season-ending injury the second game of his junior season, Maggi said that Trumble probably would have been a three-year starter and they relied a lot on him as a sophomore.

He said if Class 3A post season honors were position specific rather than voting on just players, Trumble would have been all-state as a sophomore because the stats showed he was the best punter and kicker in the state.

Maggi said the Wolves benefited from the field position Trumble gave them.

“If we were not able to get a drive going he could turn the field or make them drive a long field,” Maggi said.
