Girl dies in gorge accident

A Saturday outing at the Flaming Gorge turned tragic when a vehicle rolled into to the water, resulting in the death of a four-year-old girl.

According to a press release from the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office, four-year-old Natalie Gibson died in the incident. The release states emergency responders were notified of the incident at around 4 p.m. Saturday. Initial reports claimed the vehicle had gone through the ice at the gorge, but was corrected in a subsequent release. According to the sheriff’s office, the vehicle went into the water along the west bank of the gorge about 14 miles south of Green River.

Witnesses to the incident reported that a four-person group consisting of Gibson, her 23-year-old mother Keriane Mosher, 27-year-old Jeff Harrison and an unidentified 16 year old were fishing from the bank when the vehicle, a Jeep Wrangler, rolled into the water. According to the department, Harrison attempted to stop the vehicle, but was injured in the process. The Jeep was completely submerged, forcing the group to walk out of the area until they were able to get cell phone service.

Jack Weimer and Ray Koivusaari, members of the Sweetwater County Dive Team, located the vehicle resting on its top at a depth of 15 feet and recovered the girl’s body.

An autopsy took place Tuesday in Loveland, Colo., and an investigation into the death continues.
