Tourney ends with 1st-place finish

In a dominant fashion, the Green River High School Speech and Debate Team kicked off the season with its first win.

The team did not have to travel far because the tournament was in Rock Springs. Thirteen schools, including one from Idaho, were in attendance. The team came out on top with 170 points, the second place team had a total of 86 points.

“We had many students in finals and several first-place finishes,” head coach Carina Stulken said.

The team saw its biggest competition from Highland High School from Idaho, Rock Springs and Kelly Walsh.

“I knew that were weren’t as prepared as we will be later in the season, it is just too early and we haven’t been practicing for long so many students aren’t doing both of their events yet,” she said.

The team can always improve and Stulken expects the students to take the constructive criticism they received at the tournament seriously and make the adjustments needed to improve.

“This first tournament gave them a chance to figure out how their pieces will do competitively and what they need to change,” Stulken said.

The next tournament will take place in Cheyenne at Cheyenne South High School. Stulken said this is a novice only tournament so new members of the team will have another chance to compete and learn.

“The first few tournaments help them to get their legs under them competitively,” she said.
