Wolves seeking first win
The Green River High School football team will look to end their 2014 season on a high note Friday night at home against Worland.
After a 46-14 loss last week at Cody eliminated them from the Class 3A playoffs, Green River (0-7, 0-4 3A West) will be looking for their first win of season with kickoff at 6 p.m. in the friendly confines of Wolves Stadium.
Green River head coach Don Maggi said he told his team after the Cody game that getting ready for a football season is a year long process and when they put that much work into something they have to go out and finish well.
"We've got one game left. Let's go out and get a win for those seniors who don't have another chance, and let's get a win to turn things the right direction for next season with the kids that will be returning," Maggi said.
Worland comes into the game 2-5 on the season and is also winless in 3A West play.
Maggi said that Worland has struggled a little bit during conference play and they are not tremendously big, something Green River has also struggled with during the season. He said he thinks Green River matches up good with Worland.
Maggi added that the Warriors have a scheme similar to what Jackson ran a couple of weeks ago and Green River has the familiarity on how to defend it. The Wolves lost 38-17 to Jackson, but held the vaunted Broncs running attack under their season average.
"We did a good job competing with Jackson for three quarters, we just need to find a way to finish the game,' he said.
CODY MATCHUP
Despite trailing as much as 46-0 last Friday night to the home standing Broncs, Green River fought to the end and were able to score two fourth quarter touchdowns.
Taking over at quarterback for an injured Tyler Vendetti, sophomore Drew Wilson scored the first Green River touchdown with a 10-yard run. Junior Gage hunt scored minutes later to give the Wolves the final score of the game.
Maggi said much like they have all season, Green River competed hard against Cody who he added was probably the best team they've matched up against all season.
"They are big, they're strong, and they're fast," he said.
The fourth-year Green River coach said Cody is a senior laden team with 22 seniors and the program is starting to enjoy the fruits of playing those kids as sophomores two years ago.
Much like the Broncs two years ago, Maggi said that the Wolves are playing a lot of young kids that are learning to play on Friday night.
He said a big factor to have success like Cody did after playing younger kids, is what the kids do in the offseason.
