The hard work by several Green River High School students was recognized last Tuesday by the Sweetwater County School District No. 2 Board of Education.
The first to be recognized by the board was senior Alan Halverson.
In September, Halverson received the prestigious honor of being named a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist.
He was selected from 1.5 million who entrants into the program. According to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, of the 1.5 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT scores qualify for recognition in the program
In September, these high scorers are notified through their schools that they have qualified as either a Commended Student or Semifinalist.
A total of 16,000 students were selected as semifinalists. Board Chair Steve Core lauded the accomplishments of Halverson and said he scored higher than the top one percent on the PSAT.
The finalists will be named in February and Halverson said along with having to take the SAT test to be in consideration as a finalist, he had to write an essay about an challenge he had to overcome.
YEARBOOK
Students in the Green River High School yearbook class were also recognized Tuesday for finishing second at the state competition earlier this month.
Green River High School, whose yearbook is titled “Rendezvous” finished with 883 points, just ten points behind state champion Kelly Walsh. For their efforts, they were one of only three schools to receive a Golden Pony award.
