The kindergarten students in Cindy Brandjord's class at Harrison Elementary School are crane crazy.
Recently, the students were visited by Joe Leatherman, who brought his crane to school while talking to the students about his job and how he works.
"We got to see it move," Vincent Pavey, a student in the class said.
The students were so impressed by the machine, Branjord allowed the children to work on projects revolving around tremendous cranes. Branjord said the kids became excited when they realized they could write about and draw cranes as well as actually build them.
"We saw a video of cranes and thought we could put together cranes," Kaleb Clark, another student in the class said.
Using boxes, some string, various objects and a healthy bit of imagination, the students created their own cranes. Many of their homemade contraptions featured functions that aren't typical of how cranes typically operate, such as collecting rainwater to spray plants with or side buckets to scoop up soil or gravel.
Their excitement was evident in how they talked about their individual creations. Their beaming smiles and enthusiastic speech served as evidence enough that their project and the chance to see a real crane up close left an impression on them.
