Wolves show promise in opener

The Green River High School tennis team opened the season with two down-to-the-wire battles against visiting Powell and Cody.

In their first action of the season Friday against Powell, both the Green River boys and girls both put up valiant efforts before each fell 3-2 to the visiting Panthers.

Head coach Phil Harder said the matches were both very close and the results were close to being different and Green River getting the victories.

On the girls side, number one singles player Anna Ujvary picked up a 6-2, 7-6 win over Cydney Barrus.

Playing at the number two singles position, Bailey Deverick was also successful in her first match of the season with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Laura Bright.

The ladies double teams were not as successful with number one team McKenzie Lucas and Isabel Leininger (0-6, 1-6), number two team of Cassie Deverick and Mikayla Shutran (4-6, 2-6), and Holly Huber and Jessica Scott (4-6, 1-6) all dropping matches to Powell.

In boy’s action, umber two singles player Taten Knight picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sterling Cozzens and the number two doubles team of McCaden Mikesell an Adrun James (6-4, 0-6, 6-3) also picked up a victory.

Playing at number one singles, Alexander Marchal lost to Cody Akin of Powell, 3-6, 2-7. The humber one doubles team of Jacob Lock and Brandon Lee (3-6, 3-6)and the number three team of Cody Lee and Brenden Bloomquist (6-3, 2-6, 4-6) also lost to the visiting Powell.

Green River picked up their first team victory of the season Saturday when the Lady Wolves defeated Powell 3-2.

Bailey Deverick (6-2, 6-1) picked up a win at the number two singles position and was joined with win by the number one doubles team of Lucas and Leininger (6-1, 3-6, 6-3), and the humber two team of Cassie Deverick and Huber who picked up a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

Ujvary lost in two sets to Megan Dickerman of Powell, 0-6, 0-6 at number one singles and the number three doubles team of Shutran and Savannah Hook lost in two sets, 1-6, 3-6.

On the boy’s side, Marchal picked up a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win at number two singles and Lock and Mikessel also were triumphant with a 6-4, 6-1 victory.

Knight lost a three set battle at number one singles to Zach Ross of Cody. After winning the second set 7-5, he lost a 9-7 tiebreaker in the third set.

Lee and James lost 4-6, 2-6 at number two doubles and the number three doubles team of Cody Lee and Andrew Halverson lost 4-6, 1-6.

Following the two weekend matches, Harder said that both the boys and girls teams played good tennis.
