Coach pleased with progress of 2014 Wolves runners

There will be a solid mix of returners and newcomers for the 2014 Green River High School Cross County team.

The Lady Wolves will return four members who competed at the 2013 state meet in Sheridan.

Leading the way for the squad will be senior Nicole Davis and junior Josie Givens.

Davis earned all-conference honors last season by finishing in ninth at the regional meet in Green River. Givens just missed out by finishing in 11th place.

“They will provide leadership. It’s nice to have leaders who set a good example and they should be strong runners,” head coach Steve Boyd said.

The longtime coach added that Givens was sick during last year’s season and that she should be a lot better this year.

The other two returning members of the state squad are sophomore Sarah Joyner and senior Cheyenne McMichael.

Boyd said he is looking for the fifth runner to step up and freshman Cassie Newcomb and Shelby Lockman have both looked go so far in practice.

On the boy’s side, Green River will return their third runner from the state team in senior Austin Waters. Jaryn Johnson and Curtis Westenskow were also members of the 2013 state team.

“We also have some newcomers out that look strong,” he said.

Joining this years squad will be junior Shawn McGuire who was strong during the 2013 track season. Boyd said sophomore Braden Reichl and freshman Brayden Kovick have also looked strong.

Currently the team has 18 members, down from around the normal number of 20 to 25. Boyd said they may pick up a couple more, but he is happy with the ones he has.

“They are working hard and they want to be here,” Boyd said.

As far as expectations, he said they are not huge.

“Our goals our to simply prepare hard, compete hard, and represent Green River.”
