October is a month of awareness for multiple causes, but one that is often overlooked is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. The tragedy of losing a baby affects one in four women and impacts families across the country, but remains an often undiscussed topic. Courtney Swanson is one Green River resident wanting to change that fact in order to bring more understanding, as well as hope and healing to those who've been impacted by it. President Ronald Reagan first declared October to be a...
Although Sweetwater County is a small community, it's not immune to feeling the effects of national unrest - such as the tensions between law enforcement and the public that have come to the forefront over the past year and a half. This is why the county's law enforcement agencies hosted the "Faith and Blue: A Community Conversation" as an opportunity to connect with the community. An open house event and dinner took place at the Sweetwater Events Complex Sunday. This was the second year local...
Friendship, the challenges of aging, and a battle of the sexes are all at the heart of "Beer for Breakfast," the Actors' Mission's newest production opening this weekend. The men feel that Jessie, the wife, has intruded on their fun, and a showdown full of grade school games and challenges ensues. "Each character has a backstory that I think we all can...
Hoping to inspire the community’s creative spark and submissions for its literary journal, Western Wyoming Community College plans to host workshops throughout the semester. “Boars Tusk” is a yearly literary journal publishing poetry, fiction, nonfiction, artwork, and photography. Although the journal was started many years ago, it fell by the wayside according to Michelle Zuppa, the publication’s faculty advisor. The journal was rejuvenated by Western faculty members Christopher Propst and Ric...
Exclamations of excitement, surprise and occasionally disgust filled the multipurpose room in the library last Thursday as a group of teenagers conducted a blind taste test of freeze-dried candy. Becky Iwen, the Sweetwater County Library System's Youth Services Manager, organized the taste test as one of the activities for the weekly Teen Thursdays program. Iwen owns a freeze dryer that she bought for her family to make food for backpacking. After buying it, she saw people on the internet...

Even though many local workers were hired by PBI, several company representatives have made Sweetwater County their home for the duration of the project. “Everywhere we go we try to give back to the community,” Rick Haydo...

Sometimes living without regret means making big decisions. This is true for Jason Grubb, who announced last week he is resigning from his position as the Sweetwater County Library System director. Grubb told the Green River Star he is stepping down because he wants to start his own web design company. “I’ve always wanted to work with myself, I feel like there’s a unique opportunity, and honestly I’m not getting any younger, so I just feel like if I don’t do this now it’s just never going to ha...
The Green River Police Department has a Marine joining their ranks. Monday, new recruit Jennie Kordus received her badge and was welcomed into the fold. A 2013 graduate of Green River High School, she returns to her hometown after spending the last eight years in the Marines. Kordus said she initially wanted to go into a career in healthcare, but the amount of time she would have spent in college caused her to seek another path. She started looking into enlisting in the armed forces and decided...
If you drive up to Castle Rock Rehabilitation Center and the Villa, a small patch of trees at the front of the parking lot might draw your attention. You might notice the eclectic lawn ornaments, hear the wind chimes, or see the colorful painted rocks spread on the ground in front of another rock with red letters spelling out "The Castle Rock and Villa Rock Garden." If you look closely, you might see a woman sitting in a chair made out of horseshoes tucked among the trees, reading or tossing...

While the Greater Green River Intergalactic Spaceport hasn't received any extraterrestrial visitors lately, it has welcomed pilots and travelers from all over. The 15th Community Exhibit at the Community Fine Arts Center has a theme residents can likely relate to: “Sweetwater Landscapes.” Hosted each October, the exhibit is open to all artists from Sweetwater County. Artists of all levels are encouraged to submit artwork that follows this year’s theme. The show will open Oct. 1 and remain on display through Oct. 30. “Over the years we have had a variety of themes including portraits, postcard-sized art, autumn, trains, and the color gold for our 50th anniversary,” said Debora Soule, CFAC director....

Green River Animal Control has been busy. Tracy Wyant and Kim Wilkins, Green River's two full-time Animal Control Officers (ACOs), have had their hands full lately. The Animal Control Shelter usually averages six to seven dogs at a time - last Friday they had 19. Wyant said the shelter has seen more animals than usual this summer, and Wilkins noted that they've been dealing with a number of other cases, such as wildlife calls. However, staying busy is nothing new for Animal Control. "We do more...
