Governor Mark Gordon has appointed Rock Springs poet Barbara Smith as Poet Laureate. She is the ninth Poet Laureate in state history. Smith taught for 38 years at Western Wyoming Community College (WWCC) prior to her retirement in 2007. A 43-foot-long golden spike has been making its way across the country for the past two weeks, traveling from the artist's studio in Kentucky to the monument's final home in Utah.
