More and more electric vehicles are traveling Wyoming’s roads. For people driving past the White Mountain Mall in Rock Springs, it’s no longer an uncommon sight to see Telsa electric vehicles making use of the company’s super chargers in front of the mall. Additionally, a few county residents are now the proud owners of electric vehicles. While a complete conversion to electric vehicles, if the market moves in that direction, is still decades off, Green River could benefit from installing a few third-party electric vehicle charging stati...
Former legislator supports Friess Dear Editor, After speaking with the candidates about the issues that are so crucial to our state, I have determined that Foster Friess is the best person to address the complex problems facing Wyoming. This state is blessed to have such a great field of candidates that are willing to set aside their personal and professional time and money to run for office. Foster stood out to me because of his willingness to listen and his true desire to fix the problems we have. The fact that he cannot be bought by the...
“Now you’re playing with power!” Nintendo’s marketing in the 80s always focused on power. The company’s magazine was named “Nintendo Power.” Some of the company’s television advertising featured lightning bolts and thunder. The Nintendo Entertainment System being a powerful entertainment tool was an idea the Japanese company pushed heavily on its customers. I bought one of Nintendo’s NES Classic Editions a few months back, thinking back to about how, 27 years ago, I would have to wait until afte...
You may have noticed some changes at the Green River Police Department. Not only do we have some new faces, but we have a new look as well. In the last year we have had five officers retire. We appointed a new chief, Tom Jarvie. Two captains were promoted, Shaun Sturlaugson and Janet Kauchich. Promoted to sergeants were Brad Halter, Jesse Nielson, Joe Cronk, and Det. Rob Fischer. Three new corporals were also promoted: Jason Bomba, Gary Bach, and Arner Smart. The GRPD still had spots to fill, and we were lucky enough to have brought in four new...
It’s safe to say everyone in Green River has had a chance to look at the new mural on Flaming Gorge Way, either by driving past the Century Link building across from the Sweetwater County Courthouse, or on the People page of our newspaper last week. The mural is a fantastic representation of Green River. it is a positive reflection of what makes our community special. From the locomotive to the wild horses and Castle Rock, it’s a perfect celebration of Green River in time for the city’s 150th anniversary. The completed mural is a major accompli...
I’m going to start out with a few rhetorical questions. These may not seem related, but stick with me, it will come together. When was the last time you got together with your neighbors? Do you know them well, or is it more of a quick wave from the driveway? And secondly, are you familiar with the police officers in your community? Do you know what services they provide, how to reach them, and when? These two sets of people make up an important part of our community experience, at an individual level and collectively. Police-community p...
I can still recall how as a child certain words could instantly lead to automatic excitement. Parade, park, fireworks, playground, lake, fishing, carnival and camping. The one word that would literally have me running around yelling and screaming was a short word -- fair. Yes. That word instantly had me thinking of all the fun things I like to do at the fair, including the rides, games, food and animals I’d see. Growing up in a small county, which consisted of a lot of dairy farmers like our f...
Two years ago in this space I told the story of a Mississippi woman, Katherine Green, who got caught in the unsavory business practices of the air ambulance industry that has trapped many more Americans since then. Green, a college history professor, chose to fight the company that transported her late husband to a Jackson hospital after he suffered a fatal fall in their home. The ambulance company Rocky Mountain Holdings, a subsidiary of Air Methods, billed her $50,950. Her husband’s insurance company, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of M...
At what point have we gone too far? Is it when the State Lands and Investments Board lists lands surrounding an iconic Sweetwater County landmark in an oil and gas lease sale? Is it when large portions of lands known as Sweetwater County’s crown jewel are planned to be leased for similar development by the Bureau of Land Management? At what point can we collectively say “it’s too much?” We’re not against the development of our county’s vast mineral wealth. Minerals are by far the largest employer in the county and according to data from Sweetw...
Dear Editor, Trevor Noah, along with many other people around the world, recently have commented that “Africa won the World Cup” because of the large number of players that have African roots on the French team. The French Ambassador Gérard Araud rebuked this statement, resulting in Noah responding to him and furthering his initial statements. His arguments are incredibly insensitive and dangerous. In 1995, South Africa (where Noah is from) won the World Cup for rugby with only one black player. Nelson Mandela spent the entire year atte...
As I was typing up the community calendar for next week a sudden realization hit me -- there’s only one month left before the kids go back to school. What? I think “That can’t be right. They just got out of school.” However, a quick double check of the calendar only confirms it. I start thinking about my mental checklist of all the things I wanted to do with my boys this summer and I start to panic. Then I realize I may not have gotten to do all the things I wanted to do with them, but they have...
Wilderness, Old English for “self-willed land,” is suggestive of the American spirit of self-reliance, rugged individualism, and adventurousness –these characteristics receiving birth from Wilderness itself. Return visits for us and for future generations is a restorative to the world’s continuation. It’s sort of like visiting with great, great, great, great, grandparents. What remains of legally designated Wilderness Areas, and Wilderness Study Areas (WSAs), which are, ideally, future Wilderness Areas, are important for several reasons,...
The University of Wyoming wasn’t likely expecting the criticism it received when it unveiled its new marketing slogan “The World Needs More Cowboys.” The critical comments are coming from some faculty members who claim the slogan isn’t inclusive and supports a stereotypical image of a white man in blue jeans and wearing a cowboy hat. The university claims the slogan will be used with images that don’t associate with the commonly held image of the cowboy. We think it’s fair to let the university move forward with its slogan and their plans for u...
“Now you’re playing with power.” I remembered the cheesy slogan from an old Nintendo Entertainment System commercial back from the mid-1980s when I found and bought one of Nintendo’s NES Classic Editions recently. Sure, video games look much better and shinier than they did 30-plus years ago, but I have fond memories sprawled out on the living room floor playing “Super Mario Bros.” and “Donkey Kong.” Decades later, these games still put a smile on my face. As I make my way through the sys...
I’m not sure what’s worse -- a cold or the medicine to treat the cold. It’s bad enough to have gotten a summer cold, but for me it’s always tough trying to decide whether or not to suffer it out or give in a take some medication. If I don’t take the medication, I have to deal with the constant head pounding, sneezing, sore throat, coughing and overall ickiness I feel when I get a cold. However, if I take the medication, then I feel as though I am watching my own life pass me by in slow moti...
Imagine this. Your phone rings and a pleasant voice starts talking to you about your recent visit to your favorite restaurant. You reply, and a conversation follows. The voice responds and you are convinced that you are speaking with a person… but you aren’t! Instead you are speaking to an Artificial Intelligence (AI) program that is so advanced that you can’t tell if it’s a live person. Science fiction? Not anymore. Recently Google demonstrated Google Duplex. This appointment program has passed the famed Turing Test for AI, which requires that...
The coming week will be exceptionally busy for Sweetwater County. In Green River, the Muley Fantatic Foundation will host its first Mansface Mountain Music Festival at Expedition Island starting Friday. On Saturday, Rock Springs will host its annual International Day celebration in Bunning Park. Sunday marks the start of the National High School Finals Rodeo at the Sweetwater County Events Complex, which will run through the following week. Those NFHSR events include a shooting competition which will take place in Green River. Needless to say,...
Dear Editor, The editorial page of the June 27 issue was quite interesting. Adjacent columns addressed an issue from two viewpoints. “Open the state checkbook” by Adam Andrzejewski of openthebooks.com pointed out the need to have accurate and timely financial records. He also correctly pointed out that these records are being “slow-walked” by the State Auditor Cynthia Cloud and her deputy, Sandy Urbanek. That the office charged $8,000 for what should be public records borders on outrageous. Their campaign that got them elected was based o...
Dear Editor, I should like to call attention to the Green River Post Office. As you drive up, you see eye-catching planters containing some lovely flowers. And there has been some painting done on the building. I have noticed shrubs that have been trimmed. All of this is such a great thing for this public place. Congratulations to the manager and other folks who have done such an amazing improvement. Thank you. Pat Jaramillo Green River...
There’s a new law in place. As of July 1, Wyoming’s Move Over law has been broadened. Drivers must now move over in the far left lane for maintenance, construction and utilities workers and vehicles, and emergency responders when traveling on Wyoming’s interstates and highways. Hopefully this is something you already do. It’s more than a courtesy. Anyone who has found themselves stranded on the side of a busy interstate knows how dangerous it can be to get out of your vehicle. First responders, tow truck operators, and even good samarit...
Last week, we received an email from Anne Backstrom of Green River, regarding typos appearing in the newspaper. I thought it is an important topic to address, as I can’t deny there hasn’t been a problem with that occurring. What follows is her email, followed by my response: From Anne Backstrom On the front page of this week’s paper there is an article by the paper’s editor. My question is: who actually edits and proofreads your paper? Each week there are numerous misspellings and word omissio...
There are real people behind the publication of this newspaper. The shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Maryland which left five staff members dead is an all too sobering reminder of that fact. Five people, all of whom were someone’s neighbors, friends, family members and coworkers, were murdered because of the work they do. The response from Chase Cook, a Capital Gazette reporter posting reports to social media from the scene wouldn’t surprise anyone who has spent time working in news. “I can tell you this: WE are putting out a damn...
Dear Editor, An open letter to the bicyclists using the Greenbelt pathways: Would you please, PLEASE, give some kind of alert, vocal or bell, as you approach those of us who walk. I am so tired of being startled out of my skin when suddenly being passed by someone who has come up silently from behind. My heart can only take so much of this. Carol Aldinger Green River...
Every once in a while, a memory from my childhood comes back to me vividly. Sometimes it doesn’t even have anything to do with what I’m doing, but the memory floods in and I can’t help but relive it. Sometimes the memories are good and other times they are bad, but they’re my memories just the same. This past week, as I was thinking about the Fourth of July fireworks my family will see, when a memory came back to me. It was when I saw my first big fireworks show. I was probably in element...
I was recently at a FEMA led Emergency Preparedness training. The class was less boring than it sounds and really got me thinking. Not just about being prepared at a government and city level, which is what I was there for, but on a personal level. How does an entire city stay in a state of preparedness for an emergency? While there are plans, practice, contact lists, mutual aid agreements, and more across the pillars of city and county government the real preparedness is in the household of every citizen in the form of an emergency kit and a f...
