  • So long and thanks for all the fun

    David Martin, Editor|Sep 24, 2014

The youth services desk at the Sweetwater County Library is usually a busy post, even during the school year. Anyone walking by the desk will often see Youth Services Director Ellie Davis working on a project behind the desk or talking about the latest books with children. Tuesday morning, she helped a trio of students from the Thoman Ranch School. The students, dressed in their best for school picture day, walked through the rows of shelves while Davis made suggestions and chatted about her vis...

  • Our view: Costly method may work

    Sep 24, 2014

Our readers might want to file this idea under crazy. But, it might be a viable one. One of the greatest challenges facing Green River is the lack of developable commercial land. Sure, there are a number of places that businesses can use to establish themselves in Green River, but we believe land that could be used to build to the needs of a business is needed as well. One way of going about creating this land would be to level out areas that would otherwise be too topographically challenging to develop upon. A daunting task, truth be told,...

  • Letter: Horse gathering helps the land

    Sep 24, 2014

Dear Editor, In recent weeks there has been quite the stir regarding the management horse gathering that is being conducted by the Bureau of Land Management. I emphasis the word management as this effort is essential to the health of the landscape and by law must be carried out. The associated protest rallies and their sound bites that have garnered headlines are diluting the real issue. Any momentum gained through these protests by a means of emotional attachment and lack of science based research is truly a travesty. Sportsmen need to answer...

Dear Editor, This week’ s (Sept. 10 edition) Green River Star had an archives page that I enjoyed very much. Six different things reminded me of the past, made me smile, and touched me. I enjoy it more when you put an article from every decade rather than just one page from the past. Thank you, Owen Morgan Green River...

  • Library can help with canning and recipes

Pat Horn, Sweetwater County Library System|Sep 24, 2014

Standing at the kitchen sink, watching the skin peel away from a peach, I remembered my mother doing just this through my growing-up years. My mother’s peaches were a work of art in a Mason jar. Their beauty and delectable taste rivaled the best blue ribbon awards at any County Fair. She’d dip the fuzzy peaches in hot water for a few moments to allow easier removal of the skin without damaging the flesh. She always knew just how long each peach would take. It was important to her that the skins were removed with care, lacking any nicks, no sig...

  • In the mouth of a lion: I'll never set a record

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Sep 24, 2014

If you walk into the office of the Green River Star, you will see a stack of newspapers from around the western United States on the counter. Each week, I’ll take a look at a few of them to get story, photo, and design ideas, and also just to see what’s the pulse of some of the communities around the size of Green River. While I was looking at the Weiser (Idaho) Signal American last week, I came across a story about two senior volleyball players who smashed the Guinness World Record for the mos...

    Stephanie Thompson, People Editor|Sep 24, 2014

Yes. It's that time of the year again. Flu shot time. While most of us tend to cringe at the sound of getting a shot, some think of it as a shot now, no flu later sort of a deal. According to the Center for Disease Control website, www.cdc.gov/flu, the "CDC recommends an annual flu vaccine for everyone six months of age and older. Flu activity is low across the United States now, but usually begins to increase in October and most commonly peaks between January and March." Sweetwater County...

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Sep 24, 2014

By JACK H. SMITH Staff Writer Looking back at her childhood, Cori Potter has fond memories of her sister Jolene Potter. Some of her favorite memories of her older sibling by two years were camping trips when they were little. The family would ride four wheelers, fish and go backpacking. She also remembers her as a loving mother to her sons Rylan and Nate, and while she was often times working two jobs, she would still always find time to get the boys to and from their activities. Stephanie Thompson, People Editor|Sep 24, 2014

The attendance was sparse for a fun event at the Golden Hour Senior Center. On Thursday, only two seniors showed up for the JELLO bird feeder event, but they sure had a good time. Carol Lowell and Barb Little were following GHSC activity coordinator Kelly Harsha's instructions on how to make bird feeders out of bird seed and unflavored Knox JELLO. First, Harsha made the JELLO. Once it was at the right consistency, not too hard and not too soft, she added the seeds. The residents took over from...

This reaction caused Collins, who was a passenger, to fall out of the golf cart. Collins hit his head hard on the asphalt. Shannon Selway, family friend, said he was then transported to the Memorial Hospital...
