  • City Hall shot Sunday night

    David Martin, Editor|Jan 28, 2015

Loud shots fired Sunday night resulted in multiple calls to the Green River Police Department, as well as a broken window at City Hall. According to a GRPD press release, calls reporting the shots started coming into the department at 10:39 p.m. and officers searching the area soon discovered a second-story window at City Hall with a bullet hole in it. The window connected to an unused office near offices utilized by the city administrator, the city’s grants manager and the Urban Renewal Agency and Main Street manager. Det. Luke Benson with t...

  • Administrator's role discussed

    David Martin, Editor|Jan 28, 2015

It’s one of the biggest decisions the Green River City Council will make in 2015, which will have an impact on the city’s employees and residents. Filling the open city administrator position is something the council has discussed extensively. Since December, the council has discussed the position and its applicants in executive sessions at the end of their regular council meetings. “We need that position filled,” Mayor Pete Rust said last week. Rust said the city’s budget review period is approaching and while Finance Director Jeff Nieters doe...

  • Retail business slow in downtown

    David Martin, Editor|Jan 28, 2015

A few business owners downtown report seeing sluggish business in Green River, with one former downtown business owner saying the area is dying. Melissa Neher, owner of Kids Corner on Flaming Gorge Way, said she has a hard time getting customers through her door, saying parking along the street is very limited and is taken up by customers going to the nearby restaurant. For Neher, the problem with parking is only intensified due to the city spending money to create a park near the city’s clock tower as opposed using the space as a downtown p...

  • Shopko, Pamida lawsuit dismissed

    Stephanie Thompson, People Editor|Jan 28, 2015

Almost a year has passed since a Green River man filed a complaint against Shopko and its pharmacy, claiming they gave him the wrong prescription for six months, which caused him to have more medical problems. On Jan. 12, 2015, a request to dismiss the case with prejudice was granted. The request was filed by Gary Alan Marlin. Marlin filed the original lawsuit on Feb. 25, 2014, in the Third District Court against Shopko Stores Operating Co. LLC and Pamida Stores Operating Co., LLC, John Does 1-4 and Jane Does 1-4. The John and Jane Does were em...

  • Our View: City needs Futures

    Jan 28, 2015

“Downtown is dying.” Those aren’t our words, but the words of a businessman who operated on Flaming Gorge Way, Green River’s main street, and left it. It isn’t hard to see why someone would come to that conclusion, with vacant storefronts and little business traffic. Many of the shop owners still there agree business is hard because people don’t often stop along Flaming Gorge Way. It isn’t just business owners noticing it either. While campaigning for his city council seat, Councilman Ted Barney spoke about wanting to focus on economic deve...

  • Letter: Support public lands workers

    Jan 28, 2015

Dear Editor, Increasingly we are seeing an irrational and unfair anger build up against public lands and the people who work for the federal government. The High Country News, on Oct. 27, 2014, published an extensive article about threats and physical violence against people who work for the Forest Service, the BLM, the Park Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and others. We should, however, ask ourselves, “What would the western United States be like without these land agencies and their employees?” One individual, a rancher, saw it...

  • From legal forms to genealogy, find it all in the databases

Micki Gilmore, Sweetwater County Library System|Jan 28, 2015

It is 2015! I still can’t believe it. With the New Year comes many new tasks. For many people this starts with the New Year’s resolutions and getting prepared for the year ahead. Whether it’s new diet, getting organized or just making more time for ourselves, this is a great time to start something new. One of my priorities this year is to make sure all my important papers are in order. I do a pretty good job generally, but with all things, we need to update now and then. One of the ways we can all do this is by visiting the Legal Forms datab...

  • I'm not the best speller in the world

    Stephanie Thompson, People Editor|Jan 28, 2015

I have never considered myself a good speller. I know it sounds weird coming from a writer, but many writers I know would admit the same thing. Although I always did well on spelling tests in school, I never thought or considered myself a good speller. While I was covering the Monroe Intermediate School spelling bee last week, I was reassured that I in fact am not the best speller. This took me back to the spelling bees I participated in as a child. Needless to say, my room was not filled with...

  • Staying away from the big game Sunday

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Jan 28, 2015

Every morning on the way to work I listen to ESPN Radio to catchup on sports from the night before and hear the so-called “experts” spin their twists on a variety of topics. Instead of analysis of Sunday’s Super Bowl, the past week plus has been nothing but talk about the psi of footballs. Under closer examination, someone on the New England Patriots probably deflated footballs, but in truth they probably would have won the AFC Championship against the Colts with bricks for footballs, eight...

The Golden Hour Senior Center hosted a casino night to raise funds for the center. Seniors would buy a money bag with $250 worth of casino chips for 10 real dollars. • Six advance to districts

    Stephanie Thompson, People Editor|Jan 28, 2015

Before the Monroe Intermediate School spelling bee even started, the field was narrowed down to 12. MIS sixth-grade teacher Karl Schnaekenberg said all of the sixth-grade students were given 20 words to spell. Those who missed the fewest advanced to the spelling bee. The students were asked to write down the word after the teacher spoke it. Schnaekenberg said it was like a spelling test, but the words were hard. This was a way to narrow down the field of competitors. Schnaekenberg said those 20...

It was a Tuesday morning, around 1 a.m. Pamela Spivak, who is paralyzed on the left side after a stroke she suffered in 2011, was in bed when she started reaching for her cell phone on the nightstand next to her bed. • Residents enjoy warm weather in Green River

    David Martin, Editor|Jan 28, 2015

Residents throughout Green River took advantage of warmer weather occurring early this week, doing things many would typically wait until late March or early April to do. “I’m getting spring fever and we’re not through winter yet,” City of Green River employee Diane Allen said. At the Area 51 Skate Park, a group of boys took advantage of the good weather and rode their bikes and scooters around, dressed in T-shirts, not overcoats. “It’s actually nice,” Carter Paiz, one of the boys said. “It used to get real cold and we’d only be able to stay h...

The long awaited book detailing alleged supernatural activity at the Sweetwater County Library remains in development, according to Reference Librarian Micki Gilmore. • Squads gear up for RS

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Jan 28, 2015

The Green River High School girl’s basketball team won’t need much motivation in seeking their first conference win of the season. In their only game of the week, the Lady Wolves will host rival Rock Springs Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Rock Springs will come into the game with a 2-0 conference record and Carroll said a key to a Green River win will be taking better care of the basketball. “We turn the ball over sometimes when it’s not a contested turnover and we really need to stop that. I don’t think our decision making is bad, we just can’t let...

Friday night, the Green River High School wrestling team will take to the mat for their second home dual of the season against a strong Star Valley team.
