The City of Green River recently joined forces with the Wyoming Game and Fish to conduct the annual deer count within the city limits. The annual count started in 2017 after concerns were raised by the community of too many deer in the city limits. The count conducted February 8 was completed by city employees, Game and Fish personnel and a few volunteers. The city is divided into eight sections. The City of Green River, which has been a long-time supporter and sponsor of the annual Flaming Gorge Days (FGD), is gauging the interest of establishing a new public/private partnership to plan and run Flaming Gorge Days in June 2024. Thanks to donations, the Green River Animal Control Center has added more room for dogs to roam. Tracy Wyant, Community Service Supervisor, says the project could not have been completed without the many donations Animal Control has received over the years. Former longtime Green River Fire Chief Glenn Hill will be posthumously inducted into the Wyoming Fire Service Hall of Fame this August in Riverton. While sixth penny projects will not begin construction in Green River until 2024, the city continues to do preliminary work on several of the approved initiatives. The city of Green River elected not to bond the projects for cost-saving reasons and knowing that there would be work that had to be done prior to starting them. Citizens are being asked to check out the updated master plan for the Greenbelt. The master plan is available for review on the City website at www.cityofgreenriver.org. It is on the front page, about halfway down. Comments will be accepted through Feb. 17th and then will be presented for approval at the Feb. 21st Green River City Council meeting. The State Loan and Investment Board (SLIB), made up of the top five elected officials in Wyoming, awarded the City of Green River $6.25 million from a portion of the State's Federal ARPA funds. The City had requested $7.5 million, the maximum allowed, to help fund the proposed Wastewater Treatment plant. Citizens in Green River have been asking about the dog park opening since the fence was erected and grass planted late this summer. Officials hope to have the park opened next spring or early summer. Green River Fire Department will be hosting a 9/11 Memorial Walk on September 11. The walk will take place beginning at Fire Station Two, 500 Shoshone Ave. The walk will begin by walking up Shoshone Avenue to Uinta, then turn right at Uinta to Monroe Avenue, then down Monroe Avenue to Hitching Post Drive and back to Station Two. The dream of an outdoor BMX bike track in Sweetwater County is closer to reality following work over the past several weeks on leased land in Green River. The Southwest Wyoming BMX began to build the track thanks to several donations. The location is the old Bike Park in Green River. The City of Green River has received and placed two new columbariums at Riverview Cemetery after filling most of the three existing structures. Brad Raney, Parks and Recreation Director, says the two new Columbariums will hold up to 98 cremains. The Riverview Columbarium Gardens is located in the Southwest corner of the cemetery.
