This year, there were no tears from anyone in the family. I guess you could say I was more prepared or maybe it came so fast I didn’t have time to react. Yes. My son Matthew is now as we like to call him a “hot-shot first-grader;” and John started his second year of preschool. While other parents were once again encased in death grips from their children, who were crying uncontrollably as they attempted to drop them off for that first day of preschool, my John just ran off. Once again, witho...
They may not have even played their first conference game, but the girls have already set their season goals. One of the Lady Wolves volleyball team’s season goals is to make it back to state. Head coach Rikki Shantz said she usually gives the girls the first couple of weeks to set goals. Shantz also takes the time to assess the team and make her own goals. “I would like to obviously make it back to state for the third year in a row,” Shantz said. Shantz’ goals coincided with the girls. Most had...
Ten Mission at Castle Rock residents enjoyed a fishing trip to Flaming Gorge Reservoir; and some even caught some fish. On Aug. 18, the residents, eight care partners and seven volunteers ventured out on an all-day fishing trip. It's the second year in a row the center has offered this trip. Castle Rock administrator Bobbi Jo Drozd said due to the increased participation in the fishing trip, the group had to rent three pontoon boats from Cedar Springs Marina. "We are trying to focus on quality...
Armed with his handheld Global Positioning System device, a Green River resident embarked on a short cache hunt. Local geocache treasure hunter, Ellis Nelson, didn't even know what a cache was until 2006 when he went on a four-wheeler trip with friends in Utah. It was on this trip that Nelson got hooked on the hunt and the find for geocaches. Long before Pokemon Go, geocaching was the fun finding game people not only across the country, but across the globe have played and continue to play. Acco...

Residents and children had the chance to look at small planes at the Greater Green River Intergalactic Spaceport Saturday. During fourth annual Spaceport Day, children and their parents were encouraged to have breakfast, eat a cookie, drink some water or juice and make their way over to the planes. Though most of the planes were small one and two-person planes, the children thought they were huge. Some of the pilots were kind enough to let the children climb into the planes to look at the...
A deer with a drooping, broken antler, that was visibly distressed was helped by a local agency. A couple weeks ago, Green River resident Stan Blake was going into his backyard when he saw an injured buck. “I knew the deer was in distress,” Blake said. The buck was laying down and I could see its antler was broken. Blake called Green River Animal Control and officer Kim Wilkens responded to the call. It only took her a couple of minutes to decide she needed to call the Wyoming Game and Fis...

John Pawleska, Riverfest and Green River Chamber of Commerce volunteer, said the turnout was less then last year, but that could have...
It’s a sound no mother ever wants to hear. The sound of panic and fear in their child’s voice. Unfortunately, this is exactly the sound Green River resident Kymbrlee Smith heard Thursday afternoon. The Smith family and a few other families gathered at the Green River pelican beach, which is located near Expedition Island. This area is called the pelican beach because of the large pelican statue near the kayak U-drop. “My son and a couple of other boys were catching crawdads,” Kymbrlee said. A...
Green River residents are once again being asked what their stance is on the deer population. After hearing from numerous residents at a Green River City Council workshop on the deer population in the city, the Council decided to have residents complete a second survey regarding whether or not they would support thinning the deer population through culling. This would be the second survey sent out to residents on the same subject. According to Green River Police Chief Chris Steffen, the first...

While at the boil, Barrasso was put to work shoving the shrimp down to members of the Green River High School cheerleading squad who were placing the shrimp in styrofoam containers. "I...

This wasn't the only reason for Sample to return to school. "I wanted to show my kids it's important to stay in school," she said. Sample has two...

Making sure every hair is in place and shining for the judges is just one of the things Kamilyn Lloyd does. Well, for her goat anyway. For Kamilyn, this was her second year showing a goat at the fair. One of the most stressful parts of the entire fair week was making sure her goat was prefect for showmanship and market 4-H competition. Kamilyn, who i...
Deciding what to take and enter at the fair is a difficult decision, but what can make it ever harder is deciding what to bring for the first fair competition. For Green River resident Mariska Smith this was what she had to decide in the spring. Mariska, who is a member of the 4-H club Project Hope, said she picked pigs, drawing, vegetables, herbs and a quilt to take to Wyoming’s Big Show. For her first time, Smith didn’t know what to expect. Her step mother Camie Paumer said she thought her...
Funnels cakes, corn on the cob, deep-fried curly fries, navajo tacos, corn dogs and lemonades were spread out on the checkered table-cloth covered tables. While some of the residents at the Mission at Castle Rock Rehabilitation Center were eating, others were still waiting for their food or drinks. “I have the most awesome place to work because we get to do this kind of stuff with the residents,” CRRC social services director Marilyn Dockter said. On Thursday, a group of 17 CRRC residents and al...
