Among the inductees in the 2015 Green River High School Hall of Fame is a coach responsible for bringing the school four consecutive state titles. Jack Beard, as well as the 1974-1977 boys swim teams, will be inducted in a ceremony Sept. 5 and will be introduced during halftime at the Sept. 4 football game. Staff Report Sweetwater County runners performed well during the Run with the Horses races during the annual River Festival. John Pawleska, one of the race’s organizers, said local runners Adam Harlow, Brenda Gray, Jessie Ray O’Neal, and Kristine Maggi were top finishers in their races. Additionally, Rock Springs resident Julie Seymour won the women’s marathon 24 minutes ahead of the next finisher. “We had some real good times for 1,500-foot of climb in this race,” Pawleska said. Open enrollment is happening now at the Sweetwater County Child Developmental Center. Preschool classes are filling up fast. The SCCDC is ready to enroll all kids three to five years old for fall classes in Rock Springs and Green River, but spots are limited. Preschool classes start Aug. 31. All residents, especially landowners, are again being asked to assist in the management of the state’s sage grouse populations this summer by immediately reporting dead sage grouse to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department so they can be tested for West Nile virus. Past research has shown sage grouse have low resistance to the disease, which is usually fatal to the birds. A 40-year-old Utah resident died at Greens Draw Friday night. According to officials from the Daggett County Sheriff’s Office, Ryan Gardiner of Vernal, Utah, sustained serious injuries after being pinned between a camper and a vehicle. Sheriff’s deputies and other emergency responders were called to Greens Draw at about 10:30 p.m. Gardiner was conscious and responsive when responders first arrived, however his condition deteriorated and was unable to be stabilized for transport. The Green River High School Speech and Debate Team recently returned from National Speech and Debate Tournament, which took place in Dallas. Head coach Carina Stulken said Alexander Marchal made it to the semifinal round of extemporaneous debate and placed seventh out of 688 debaters in the nation.
