This weekend, Green River residents will be able to help her battle at the Strength for Laurie Cervical Cancer 5K Walk/Run. The event will take place Sept. 6 starting at 9 a.m. at Expedition Island. Last week’s edition of the Green River Star featured a column I wrote about all the places I would like to travel. Well I’d now like to say that other than a trip I’ve already paid for to Las Vegas, I don’t plan on going anywhere out of state for a long time. As I had mentioned in the column, I was going to San Francisco and I was excited to get to the airport and get out of town for a few days. The line for security looked long, but in no time I was through the line and ready to catch my flight...

It will probably go down as one of the best football games I’ve ever watched in person. It was my first memory of the ultra intense rivalry between Green River and Rock Springs and it did not disappoint. It was 1991 and it was a chilly night at Tiger Stadium in Rock Springs. Under the leadership of Mike Lopiccolo, the Tigers had a perennially strong program and had a long winning streak over their cross-county foes. I can remember the Tigers taking an early lead on a Judd Williams i...
It can be said that champions are made during the offseason, and if the summer was any indication it could be a solid year for the Green River High School volleyball team. According to head coach Rikki Shantz, the there were a lot of girls who showed up to camps during the offseason and many of them also played in club leagues. “We have a bunch of girls who have been doing clubs since seventh grade and they are finally getting to an age where they are going to make a difference of the varsity level,” she said. “Some of the girls don’t have an...
The Green River Lady Wolves showed some positive signs to start the 2014 season at a tournament in Cokeville. And while Green River was only able to pick up one victory in their first six games, head coach Rikki Shantz was pleased with her team who picked up their lone win over Rich County, Utah. Shantz said the team outplayed several of their opponents, including a four-set loss to Evanston. Looking back at the weekend of action, she said that her teams undoing was missing out on a ton of serves and that is something she will be addressing...

It was a strong start to the season for the Green River Lady Wolves cross country team. Competing for the only time at home this season, The Lady Wolves were able to finish first out of eight teams at the annual Green River Invitational. Green River was sparked by the performance of junior Josie Givens who put on an amazing effort and just missed out on first place by a second. Givens finished with a time of 20:02, just behind Hannah Behunin of Mountain View, who ran a 20:01. "She had a great...
There will be a solid mix of returners and newcomers for the 2014 Green River High School Cross County team. The Lady Wolves will return four members who competed at the 2013 state meet in Sheridan. Leading the way for the squad will be senior Nicole Davis and junior Josie Givens. Davis earned all-conference honors last season by finishing in ninth at the regional meet in Green River. In just a matter of hours, I will be heading to Salt Lake City and then on to northern California. I'm pretty excited about the journey. I've spent a lot of time in southern California, but have never seen the upper part of the state so it should be pretty darn glorious. It has been somewhere I've always wanted to go, I just have never gotten around to it. I look forward to walking across the Golden Gate Bridge, going to Alcatraz and driving down Lombard Street, hopefully not throwing up during...
