  • What happens in Vegas doesn't stay there

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Oct 8, 2014

By JACK H. SMITH Staff Writer While a lot of my fellow Americans were making their way to Apple Stores last week to see if they could bend the display models for the iPhone 6 or to properly secure their houses to prevent any intrusion from Ebola zombies, I found myself making the nine-hour voyage to Las Vegas. The popular marketing slogan states that what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas, but if that were the case I should probably stop typing now. After a chaotic literally earth shaking trip to...

  • To be a better person

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Oct 1, 2014

A few weeks ago in Salt Lake City, I was eating at a pizza place with my sister and unwinding after a long week. When the waiter came over to ask if we wanted anything else, she said just a box. Because we were traveling, I wasn’t quite sure where she was going to keep it, but I went along with it in case she just have some crazy hunger fit later. She can tend to get a bit cranky at times, so I just went with it. She had no intention of ever finishing the pizza. On the walk from the hotel we h...

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Sep 24, 2014

If you walk into the office of the Green River Star, you will see a stack of newspapers from around the western United States on the counter. Each week, I’ll take a look at a few of them to get story, photo, and design ideas, and also just to see what’s the pulse of some of the communities around the size of Green River. While I was looking at the Weiser (Idaho) Signal American last week, I came across a story about two senior volleyball players who smashed the Guinness World Record for the mos...

  • Acting like its 1995 19 years later

    Jack H. Smith, Staff Writer|Sep 10, 2014

I really would love to have one day where we could act like it’s 1995. I really don’t think it would be to much to ask, for that at least one day a week or possibly month, we could put our phones down, stay of the computers and actually have conversations with each other. Every time I go somewhere like a restaurant, most of the people sitting together just sit there and play on their phones. A lot of times I think they are just texting each other, which really makes me want to scream. Let...
