The University of Wyoming men’s basketball team rebounded from their first loss of the year in impressive fashion with a 70-35 victory Sunday over Regis University. Things won’t get any easier for the Cowboys in their second road game of the season when they travel to play California (7-1) tonight at 9 p.m. In their first road game of the season last Friday, Wyoming (8-1) was defeated by SMU, 66-53. My mom always says she knows when I’ve been to her house. There is food gone and the television is always left on ESPN. She is right. When I’m home and I’m cleaning or relaxing, I usually have some sort of game on in the background. I’m a sports junkie and love watching a great game. While I prefer to watch college football and basketball, I still will tune in every Sunday to watch pro football, but each year it gets less fun. Every time I turn on the television, the story is not about a game...
In the past, members of the Green River High School swim team would have to leave campus and practice at the pool at Monroe Intermediate School. What was once an adequate facility at Monroe had become outdated and eventually led to local voters approving a new aquatic center at Green River High School. After several delays, the state-of-the art center opened late last month, and the boy’s swimming team is looking forward to be the first high to team to use the facility. Head coach Colleen Seiloff and her 2014-15 squad are excited about the o...
The Green River High School boy’s basketball team will look to pick up their first victory Friday night in the friendly confines of Wolves Gymnasium. Green River head coach Dan LaRose said while it’s nice to open the season at home, they will be playing a very good Star Valley. The second-year coach said the Braves finished third at last year’s state tournament with only one senior and will return one all-state and two all-conference players. “They have a lot of c...
Growing up, one of my favorite holidays was Thanksgiving. Every year I looked forward to getting together with my family and having a great meal. Back then, when we arrived at someone’s house, they would always say Happy Thanksgiving, or we’d say the same if people were coming to our house. Now things have changed. More often than not you hear “happy turkey day.” The sound of people saying happy turkey day is like the proverbial fingernails on a chalk board or any other type of annoying this th...

There is an old saying that goes those with the least are willing to give the most. In the past week, I witnessed an amazing example of this in action and it really got my mind wandering. I was checking online and came across a video experiment by a group named OCK TV. In the short video, they approach a variety of people in New York City sitting outside of a pizza. One after another, they tell the diners they are hungry and asks if they could spare any of their food. One by one, the answer is...
Lincoln Middle School student Anthony Johnson is an avid Denver Broncos fan and according to his dad Chad, he lives and breaths football. The eighth-grader will soon get the opportunity of a lifetime when he gets to compete at the Broncos Indoor Practice Facility in Dove Valley, Colo. and be recognized on the field during Denver's Dec. 7 game against the Buffalo Bills at Sports Authority Field at Mile High Stadium. Earlier this month, Johnson won first-place at the Wyoming State Championship...
Keenan Carroll isn’t quite done with his soccer career. A 2010 graduate of Green River High School, Carroll recently signed to play at goalie for the University of Southern Virginia’s men’s soccer team. A three-year starter at goalkeeper for the Wolves, Carroll has spent the past two seasons as a member of the Laramie County Community College Soccer team. Carroll said the soccer program at the school is relatively new and has just been added to the Capital Athletic Conference for NCAA Division III programs. “The program has a brand new coach th...
Two Green River High School football players were recently recognized for their accolades during the 2014 season. Junior quarterback and defensive back Tyler Vendetti was selected as Class 3A All State and also earned 3A West All-Conference honors. The teams were named last week after a vote from the members of the Wyoming Coaches Association. Starting for the second consecutive season at quarterback, Vendetti was third in the state in...
There’s not much difference between the 2014 and 2015 regular season schedule for the Green River High School football team. The Wolves will play the same eight teams the same week of the season they played them last year, with the only difference being the location of the games. After playing Riverton, Torrington, Star Valley and Cody on the road in 2014, those teams will be coming to Wolves Stadium in 2015. Green River will travel to Rawlins, Powell, Jackson, and Worland. Seven of those eight teams made the playoffs last season. Wolves head c...
Human beings are a tricky bunch. While there is so much good in the world, there is way to much fighting over land and religion. There is too much crime and a lot of people really don’t care much anymore about anything but themselves and their phones. Grown men are taking multiple “selfies” a day to make themselves look horribly silly and trying to find great customer service is like trying to find a Leprechaun. You can look, but chances are you most likely are often times not going to find...
Growing up, Katie Trempe remembers her mom Roberta Metz being a very selfless person that always gave to others and helped anyone in need. She said her mom would often go without things to make she her children had whatever they needed in wanted. Earlier this year, Metz was diagnosed with triple negative stage three breast cancer and Trempe is now hoping the local community can not only help her mother out, but to also show her just how amazing the community is and how much support they have for her. A benefit dinner for Metz is scheduled to...

One week after finishing their season at the state tournament, the Green River Lady Wolves had one player named to the 4A West All-Conference team. Junior setter Hattie Hix was named to the team after a vote by the coaches in the conference. Head coach Rikki Shantz said that throughout the season Hix was a competitor. “We had a lot of success at the end of the season and peaked at the right time. I think a lot of that had to do with her,” Shantz said. “She came to practice every single day wanting to work hard, wanting to be competitive, and wa...
It’s been a great start to the season for the Green River Middle School swim team. According to coach Michele O’Melia, the girls are focusing on team commitment and having fun. Jackson was second with 219 points, Lyman was third, Evanston-Davis was fourth, Pinedale finished fifth, Kemmere...
A few months ago I went on a tirade about the amount of campaign signs that had absolutely littered Sweetwater County. It only got worse in the days leading up to the general election. And while the signs were definitely a horrific eyesore, it was some of the other things I witnessed locally, statewide, and across the nation that really make me glad the election is over. I started to see signs in my sleep and I’m pretty sure you couldn’t use the bathroom in public without a sign over the uri...
Last week was a chance for the Green River High School volleyball team to see what it's like to play at the state tournament. Playing at the Wyoming 4A State Tournament for the first time since 2009, the Lady Wolves were eliminated after losing their first two matches, but head coach Rikki Shantz was elated the girls were able to get the experience playing at the Casper Events Center. "It was awesome. I'm so proud of the girls. I don't know of many teams that would have fought so hard to get to...

It was a great year for the Lincoln Middle School eighth-grade football team. According to coach James Quiroz, both the “A” and “B” squads had undefeated seasons which was reflective of the effort and commitment that the athletes, parents, and staff put into this season. “This year’s LMS 8th grade football was another great bunch of kids to coach. They worked hard throughout the season, were very coachable, and showed a lot of character and heart. I was really proud of the growth that each a...
By JACK H. SMITH Staff Writer It was probably not an uncommon scene as a couple filled out the paperwork for their marriage license at the Sweetwater County Courthouse. As they patiently went though the stacks of paper, the soon-to-be newlyweds joked, laughed, and seemed to not have a care in the world. However this day was a little bit different. As Rosalyn Jennings and Terry Palmer meticulously went through the process, they were about to become the first couple to obtain a same-sex marriage l...
