  • Ammo makes a comeback at local stores

    Fred Uhrich, Columnist|Jan 21, 2015

I noticed it earlier this month. At our local Walmart, even with their “we have no .22 ammo for sale” sign up, they had 50-round boxes in their sales case. And on my shopping spree to Utah for some new ice fishing gear and tackle, I saw .22 ammo at all three of the major sporting goods stores. Of course some of it was weird stuff I would not like to shoot, such as sub sonic, and the prices are sky high, but it was there. But did you know why? New shooters, profiteers, panic buyers, electronic technology, and China. It’s been just a littl...

  • Jigging techniques for ice fishing

    Fred Uhrich, Columnist|Jan 14, 2015

I like catching and releasing a lot of fish and the trout I catch average 15-22 inches. I like to stay in between 10 and 20 feet of water with a few drop offs in between. Structure is a big part of it. If I find this depth of water with drop offs on the inside turn of a point, and going into a small bay, all the better. This is the type of area to find feeding fish as they cruise by looking for a meal, and a point is where you will find me fish 65 percent of the time. Good times for catching trout on clear ice with lots of light and oxygen are...

  • Fish finders improve ice fishing catches

    Fred Uhrich, Columnist|Jan 7, 2015

Electronics for ice fishing, such as sonar and underwater cameras have really advanced the sport. Fish finders come in price ranges from “ouch” but I want one, to “Holy Cow!” The ones with all the bells and whistles not only have sonar, but also a camera and GPS and add an underwater lake map SD card to the GPS. Now you are on par with everything you would want on a trolling boat. Sonar’s generally come in three types, flasher, digital vertical, and graph. I purchased my first sonar 16-17 years ago for ice fishing. It was a side finder fi...

  • Coyote hunting for the first-time hunter

    Fred Uhrich, Columnist|Dec 31, 2014

I am not a professional coyote hunter, nor an expert caller. What follows will help someone new get started if they should choose so. Coyote hunting is a way to extend your hunting season and assist with conservation. For some that have gained the experience and passion, it is an additional income. But it is the challenge of hunting the hunter that brings hunters to this sport. The easiest way to start is to go with someone that knows how to hunt coyotes. If you don’t have someone that is experienced, you can buy a how-to-call DVD, some even c...

  • Ice fishing: tip-ups versus fishing poles

    Fred Uhrich, Columnist|Dec 31, 2014

As I was digging through my gear, getting ready for this season and I have come to a conclusion that I am a hoarder. I noticed I have about nine tip-ups left that I hardly use anymore, unless I am heading over South Pass to fish Boysen or Seminole. Tip-ups have not really changed much in principle since the first wooden Beaver Dams I started using 30-plus years ago. Advancements are now that they are made of plastic and stainless steel. With sealed bearings, non-freezing lubricants, and telescoping flags, they are effective. I really like the r...

  • Cooking up a Wyoming outdoor feast

    Fred Uhrich, Columnist|Dec 17, 2014

Fishing and hunting are Wyoming’s two main pastimes. After having a successful outing, the number one task is taking care of your game and cooling it down fast. Fishing is easy, depending on what time of the year it is. For the fish you are taking home, place them in a zip-lock bag and put in an ice chest. I prefer to filet my fish, but if you are lucky and catch the big one, grilled fish steaks are great. There are premade sauces and rubs at the store, but don’t be afraid to experiment on your own. Rubs for fish can be as simple as a lig...

  • The joys found through a lifetime of bargain hunting

    Fred Uhrich, Guest Columnist|Dec 3, 2014

I really like shopping and don’t mind working on something to get it going again. Here are a few stories from looking for a good deal. My first bargain came about when I was seven years old. Making a deal, I ran into our house yelling to my mom that I needed a bag of carrots, she hollered back to look in the crisper. Trading a bag of carrots, I now had a red bicycle, what a trade. I was the envy of my little brother and sister. Of course my mother came out to see what all the yelling was about. She made me return the bike, and get the c...

  • Riding the trails in southwestern Wyoming

    Fred Uhrich, Guest Columnist|Nov 26, 2014

Mud, dirt, sand, snow, rock, and ice. Wait a week and the outdoor conditions will change. Trail riding is one of my favorite things to do, and the trails around Green River have hundreds of miles and places to ride. With an ORV sticker, and license plate I can drive just about anywhere. There are trails, and two-tracker roads for any level of ability of riding. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Pilot Butte, the ice caves, and natural horse corral. I’ve also have been on Little, Black, and Cedar Mountains. With all this riding, I always take a c...

  • Gearing up for the upcoming ice fishing season

    Fred Uhrich, Guest Columnist|Nov 19, 2014

Once again, ice fishing is right around the corner, and now is the time to go through your ice fishing gear and clean off the cobwebs while there is still good weather before the first safe ice. First, set down and make a check list, this will help you get organized, and not forget such simple things like inspecting your fishing line on each fishing pole. Then take time to think back to what went right, and wrong last season with your gear. Afterwards, set out your equipment and decide what to keep, and what to sell or give to your brother in-l...
