  • Try, try again: my first times drinking sake

    David Martin, Editor|May 11, 2016

Admittedly, my first experiences with sake weren’t terribly positive. The first time I tried it, I was a poor college student in Laramie and still getting used to the fact that I could legally get into a liquor store and actually buy something. Having had an interest in Japanese things since I was a small child, I was immediately surprised I could find a bottle of rice wine in Laramie. It was in a dark green bottle and the price was right too, so I bought it and quickly took it back to my d...

    David Martin, Editor|May 11, 2016

"No contest." Those were the words out of Jacob Triplett's mouth when he responded to the six felony charges District Court Judge Nena James read to him during a change of plea hearing Friday morning. Triplett faced charges related to the 2014 death of his infant daughter, Susan Triplett, as well as instances of child abuse involving his other children. Initially, he was charged with first-degree murder, as well as two counts of aggravated child abuse and three counts of child abuse. The...

Mothers were honored at a special Mother's Day tea luncheon hosted by Golden Hour Senior Center Friday, with help from students attending Expedition Academy. Initially 20 people signed to attend the lunch, which grew to more than 110 Friday morning. • Mr. Smith seeks a seat in Washington

    David Martin, Editor|May 4, 2016

Amongst the large number of Republican candidates seeking Wyoming’s sole U.S. House of Representatives seat in Washington, D.C., Darin Smith thinks he’s the most qualified. Smith believes his life experience has given him the edge on other candidates vying for the position. Holding both a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Wyoming and a graduate from the university’s law school, he built up and sold an investment company before starting his current career with the Chri...

  • GR defeats tough Tigers squad

    David Martin, Editor|May 4, 2016

Facing their Sweetwater County rivals on their home turf, the Green River High School boys soccer team knew they had a hard match ahead of them. Leaving Tigers Stadium Friday with a 1-0 win was the best result they could have hoped for, but head coach Chris Beiber said the team could have done better in a few areas. “They competed in every way,” Beiber said. “They wanted the ball more than we did.” Beiber said the team expected Rock Springs’ style of play after watching the Tigers play duri...

  • Local artifact included in statewide historical contest

    David Martin, Editor|Apr 27, 2016

At first glance, it isn’t a terribly impressive wooden box. The paint is worn, though its patriotic influence can still be seen in the design mimicking an American flag. The front of this battered and well-used box reads “S.I. Field Express.” While it isn’t associated with Sweetwater County’s well-known historical figures like Butch Cassidy or Major John Wesley Powell, the history it represents is important to both the state and the nation and was submitted for consideration as being one of Wy...

  • A few brief thoughts

    David Martin, Editor|Apr 27, 2016

What’s old is new... I attended a newspaper conference over the weekend. One of the tidbits I walked away with is a column style known as an ellipsis column. I won’t bore anyone with the details, but it’s an older column writing style that still is used in some newspapers. The Star has run columns like these in the past, most notably in Adrian Reynolds’ “Chewing the Fat” columns originally published several decades ago. I figured I’d play with the format this week as a way of doing somethi...

  • Zen and the art of DIY

    David Martin, Editor|Apr 20, 2016

Less than a week into owning a home, I became one of those obnoxious DIYers. I can tell I’ve become obnoxious about it; my own mother spoke with me with a glazed expression on her face when I Facetimed with her to show off the kitchen’s hardwood flooring. That floor was hidden beneath a layer of tacky green carpeting, some ancient linoleum and a nasty covering of tar paper. The project I’m working on started with a simple idea: take the carpeting out of the kitchen and replace it with some tilin...

  • The lunch party of five

    David Martin, Editor|Apr 20, 2016

The image of five guys, sitting at a table having lunch together isn’t something that would raise a lot of eyebrows. If those five are elected officials serving on the same board, as is the case with the Sweetwater County Commissioners, the situation can get a bit more murky. The group has had lunches together during days they’re meeting for official county business for the past several years. With the exception of Randy Wendling’s election in 2014, the board’s makeup has been the same since 2...

  • Boys win in bronze bracket

    David Martin, Editor|Apr 20, 2016

The Green River High School Boys Soccer team walked away from the field as champions of the bronze bracket of the tournament Green River hosted over the weekend, but difficulties making goals prevented the team from winning games their head coach felt the team could win. The boys took part in the Southwest High School Boys Soccer Tournament, which took place at Wolves Stadium and the two Monroe Intermediate School fields. Friday, the Wolves tied each of the three games they competed in. The...

  • Saying goodbye to a mentor

    David Martin, Editor|Apr 13, 2016

Green River's soccer community gathered at Wolves Stadium Saturday evening to remember and honor a longtime Green River soccer coach. Standing under a dark sky and holding Styrofoam cups containing lit candles with the words "for Todd" written on the side lit, the group formed a circle around the large GR at the center of the field. Holding those cups long after the Styrofoam started to melt and speaking through both smiles and tears, they spoke about the impact he had on their lives. Todd...

    David Martin, Editor|Apr 13, 2016

With two wins under their belt, the Green River High School Boys Varsity Soccer team are making strides towards a return appearance at the state soccer tournament in Sheridan. That’s the goal head coach Chris Bieber has for his team. The team’s most recent victory, a 2-1 win over Riverton at home Friday, featured what Beiber referred to as 20 minutes of the team’s best work of the season so far, he sees a lot of work that needs to be done between now and the state tournament. Those 20 minut...

  • Spring tennis starts season in Cody

    David Martin, Editor|Apr 13, 2016

As the snow melts away and winter turns to spring, Green River High School's tennis players are stepping onto the court for the first time this year. While spring tennis doesn't culminate with a regional or state tournament like the fall season, the sport is still sanctioned by the Wyoming High School Athletics Association. The Wolves traveled to a round-robin competition in Cody last weekend, which featured teams from Powell and Sheridan in addition to the Cody squad. Head tennis coach Phil...

    David Martin, Editor|Apr 13, 2016

Lincoln Middle School’s eighth-grade girls track team won a track meet in Riverton over the weekend, scoring 95 points by the end of the competition. The competition marked their first meet of their spring season. While the season is much shorter than a high school season, lasting only six weeks from first practice to final competition, the team does get a lot of exposure on the track. For a few, the Riverton meet marks the first time they’ve competed. Wally Cantrell, head coach for the mid...

    David Martin, Editor|Apr 6, 2016

As Sweetwater County’s offices and agencies prepare to present budgets to the county commissioners, the funding picture for the county remains grim. The county is looking at an $8 million shortfall in the coming fiscal year, roughly a 20-percent decrease in revenues from last year. The county commissioners voted 3-2 to notify county agencies to request at least a 20-percent decrease in funding from the previous year. The two dissenting votes come from Commissioners Reid West and Randy Wendling....

  • Snow storms empty WYDOT budget

    David Martin, Editor|Mar 30, 2016

A large winter storm passing through the state has resulted in between 1 and 3 inches of snow throughout Wyoming, according to the National Weather Service. The NWS, based in Riverton, said a second storm is expected to hit Thursday. In Sweetwater County, snowfall hasn’t been as severe as it has in other parts of the state, with between 1 and 2 inches being reported county-wide. However, that amount still was enough to close Interstate 80’s eastbound lanes. I-80 is the Wyoming Department of Tra...

Democrat and Sweetwater County resident Michelle Irwin is no longer seeking the Senate District 14 seat she announced she would run for last November. She’s taking another shot at the House District 18 seat she initially lost during the 2014 election. Rep. Fred Baldwin, R-Kemmerer, who defeated Irwin, announced he would run for Cooper’s senate seat. Irwin’s decision comes after Sen. Stan Cooper, R-Kemmerer, announced he would not run for re-election. Cooper has served in the Wyoming Senat...

    David Martin, Editor|Mar 23, 2016

New details involving the train derailment outside of Granger last week remain scarce as the National Transportation Safety Board continues its investigation. Last Monday evening, a coal train and intermodal train derailed a few miles outside Granger, between the town and the Tronox mine. The NTSB, which is investigating the derailment, have not released any information regarding the incident. A spokesperson for the NTSB said the investigations typically take between four and 18 months, but...
