  • Graffiti hints to larger problem

    David Martin, Editor|Aug 24, 2016

Ugh. Whenever I see some spray-painted images imitating real art, I can’t help but silently rage at the fact that someone doesn’t take pride in their community. Some images spray painted onto a wall might seem like a small issue, but what it communicates to the outside world is something anyone who cares about Green River should worry about. I’ve written about graffiti before. Driving down Flaming Gorge Way and seeing something like the pistol and heart-shaped shot group painted beneath the b...

  • Another shot at football glory

    David Martin, Editor|Aug 17, 2016

For James Bunderman, it'll be his first chance to play for the Wolves football team in a year. A broken collarbone at the start of the football season last year sidelined Bunderman for the whole fall semester. He suited up in pads with the rest of his team, watching and cheering as the Wolves advanced through the playoffs, defeating an undefeated Jackson Hole squad, and making their way to play under the lights at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie. "I was there for my team, cheering them on" he...

  • What the Olympics are about

    David Martin, Editor|Aug 17, 2016

The Olympic games in Rio have been a bit of a mixed bag. Sure, there have been plenty of exciting events that have taken place, but they’ve been marred by problems arising both before the games started and during the festivities as well. Allegations of rigged boxing matches have risen recently after an Irish fighter lost in a controversial decision to his Russian opponent and, more blatantly, a Japanese fighter losing to his Azerbaijan opponent via decision after the Japanese boxer knocked h...

    David Martin, Editor|Aug 17, 2016

A Jamestown woman got quite a scare Monday afternoon when a semi truck veered off Interstate 80 and drove through a portion of her property. The truck later caught fire, threatening a building at the residence at 13 Oxbow Drive in Jamestown. Tara Boling was watching TV at the time of the crash, saying she heard a loud pop coming from the interstate. Boling said the sound isn't unusual as tires do pop as vehicles drive along the interstate. "Next thing I know, I see a semi driving through our...

    David Martin, Editor|Aug 10, 2016

Sweetwater County School District No. 2 revealed its 2016 PAWS scores last night and while there were many improvements, district officials admit more work is needed in areas. The district’s third graders continue to chase the state testing average in reading, but have improved over the 2015 numbers. Meanwhile, fourth graders excelled past the state average and have shown drastic improvements over the 2015 averages. Students in fifth, sixth and seventh grades also made improvements, but c...

  • Spaceport funding crashes

    David Martin, Editor|Aug 3, 2016

More than $8 million will be carried onto the current budget and while it may sound like the city’s budget problems are solved, that amount is already earmarked. The carryover reflects projects previously budgeted for or already underway and includes work paid for through the sixth-penny improvement tax and other funding methods. While the list of projects includes funding for the U.P. Depot project, city vehicle replacement and improvements on Hitching Post Drive, a $97,050 line item for the G...

  • Firefighter seeks council seat

    David Martin, Editor|Aug 3, 2016

A volunteer firefighter is among those seeking election to the Green River City Council in Ward I. Tom Murphy is one of three residents seeking election in the ward, who will replace Mark Peterson as the council representative. Murphy said one of the major issues he wants to push if elected to the council is investigating if a return on investment is high enough to justify an expense. Murphy believes this outlook is especially important as the city continues to deal with decreasing sales tax...

  • Construction continues on Green River roads

    David Martin, Editor|Aug 3, 2016

Residents will continue to have road construction to drive around, at least until the end of September. A state-funded project focusing on Hitching Post Drive, West Teton Boulevard and East Teton Boulevard is underway while a sixth-penny funded city project continues along Second South Street. City Utility Manager Mark Westenskow said he hopes most of the work on Hitching Post Drive will conclude by the time school starts, but admits he doesn’t have too much control over the timeline as it is a...

  • Camp trains future Wolves for the gridiron

    David Martin, Editor|Aug 3, 2016

The future of Green River football was on display at Wolves Stadium during the last few days. The Wolves' coaching staff, with the help of several players, hosted a football camp to pass along some of the skills to kids in fourth through eighth grades. While the camp helps develop talent and, hopefully, makes enough of an impression on some of the kids to keep involved with the sport and join the high school team, head coach Don Maggi has another reason to work with the kids. "We want to win,...

  • Importance of sports physicals discussed

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 27, 2016

The annual sports physicals are a lot more than a simple rubber stamp of approval for students to compete in school athletics, they could save a life. The importance of those physicals was discussed Tuesday after questions were raised about why Castle Rock Hospital District didn’t conduct physicals at the high school like they used have in the past. Connie Fauntleroy, medical director at CRHD, said the main goal for the physicals were to find and diagnose possible heart problems that would e...

  • Complex focuses on rodeo

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 27, 2016

Rodeo is the main event for the Sweetwater County Events Complex, but comments from Gillette about attempting to keep the National High School Finals Rodeo at the Cam-Plex have caught their attention. After winning a bid to host the NHSFR in 2018 and 2019, the complex was also awarded the opportunity to host the Wyoming State High School Finals Rodeo in 2017 and 2018. The complex plans to bid on the NHSFR for 2020 and 2021 as well as the National Junior High School Finals Rodeo in 2022 and...

  • School district finalizes budgets

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 20, 2016

While it’s less than what they’ve worked with before, Sweetwater County School District No. 2’s budget will fund some pay increases for teachers originally negotiated months ago. The district’s board of trustees approved budgets for both the district and the recreation board, which utilizes a mill levy for district projects aimed at improving recreation and physical activities. The district’s valuation decreased by $82.7 million in the last year, which resulted in the valuation being $928,625,...

  • An 18th century experiment

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 20, 2016

Sometimes, it’s hard to know where a person will end up after falling down the rabbit hole known as Youtube. A person could start watching videos about ancient Roman civilization and end up watching clips from Andre the Giant’s greatest professional wrestling matches. This happened to me recently while watching cooking videos and I somehow ended up finding a series dedicated to recreating recipes from the 1700s. The series, “18th Century Cooking with Jas. Townsend and Son” is produced by a co...

  • New focus will help GRHS

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 20, 2016

The recent move to change how high school activities are scheduled is a great move by the school district. While I realize some may bemoan the fact that the Wolves won’t play as often as they have in the past, this is better for both the teachers and students involved in student activities. For the teachers, it gives them more opportunity to help students struggling in their classes and better opportunity to teach their classes. While technology does give students and teachers more opportunities...

  • District refocuses on team schedules

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 20, 2016

Athletes playing for Green River High School won’t see as much action on the road as they have in previous years, thanks to a push to reduce the number of miles student-athletes travel and increase in the time spent in the classroom. Sweetwater County School District No. 2 Athletics Director Tony Beardsley said he’s reduced the number of away events students participate in for the upcoming school year. One of the major pushes behind the reduction in travel is due to the Wyoming Legislature con...

  • Kids have fun at medieval faire

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 20, 2016

Kids and adults alike had a chance to enjoy a slice of the middle ages at the Sweetwater County Library System's annual Medieval Faire. Along with face painting, jousting and a storyteller, visitors could enjoy a number of games dating back to the period. Some are recognizable, such as bocce ball, while others, such as Kubb, might not be. Kubb is similar to horseshoes where players throw wooden pegs at blocks on either end of the field. Players take turns trying to knock over the blocks and,...

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 13, 2016

The girls on the Green River Chaos U12 Rec. team had an emotional victory in Gillette over the weekend, clenching a state championship win in the Wyoming Amateur Softball Association tournament after falling short of the prize for the last two years. Their first year competing in the tournament...

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 13, 2016

Seven of the nine Republicans seeking Wyoming’s sole U.S. House of Representatives stopped by Rock Springs to answer questions posed to them by members of the Sweetwater County GOP. The two not attending were Tim Stubson and Heath Beaudry. While much of the discussion was cordial, Rex Rammell frequently focused on Liz Cheney as a target for verbal barbs, criticizing her on how long she has resided in Wyoming and questioning whether she truly supports Wyoming residents’ values. Qua...

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 13, 2016

Grant money didn’t come in, and now the city seeks a loan to pay for design work on the proposed wastewater treatment plan it needs to build. The Green River City Council voted to apply for a $1.2 million loan to go with another $1.2 million loan it already received from the state. Initially, the loan was planned to be paired with a $1.2 million mineral royalties grant from the state, but the city did not receive the grant. Because of the economic downturn the state is experiencing, the c...

  • County still deals with prostitution

    David Martin, Editor|Jul 6, 2016

By DAVID MARTIN Editor The days of K Street’s infamy or Cat Willis’ Cat House may be long gone, but prostitution never left Sweetwater County. Prostitutes no longer walk the streets or sit at a bar in search of customer, they utilize the internet and a series of websites frequented by those seeking a sexual encounter. “It’s not that prostitution has ever gone away, it’s just headed down a different avenue,” Alison Deters, public information officer for the Rock Springs Police Department, said. D...
