With the slightest hint of winter in the air, representatives from industry, academia and government came together in Sweetwater County on a recent September afternoon to commemorate the state's long history in U.S. energy production and the leading role it is taking in the next generation of energy, including scaling up and commercializing the use of clean hydrogen. Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon, meeting with industry employees and local elected officials in Wamsutter, spoke about the creation...

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking information on a mule deer that was illegally shot in the city of Green River. The buck deer was found injured by elementary school students on Sept. 15 in the vicinity of Arkansas and Alabama Streets. Upon responding to the report of the injured deer, the animal was euthanized by department personnel. A necropsy was conducted in order to determine the cause of injury to the buck; department personnel determined the deer had previously been shot. Anyone with information on this or any other...
Dear Editor, There is much about Wyoming that our visitors adore. Lots of room, peace and quiet - good neighbors and a great heritage. We’re the smallest state in the union - but a state of solid citizens. One of the most significant ingredients in this character is a belief in God and one of the most compelling types of evidence for that belief is the “Cokeville Miracle.” Recently, I have contacted our national senators and representatives with a proposal that we share our faith by promoting and creating a national memorial remembering that ev...
Sweetwater County School District No. 2 has new programming related to mental wellness this school year thanks to funding provided by the American Rescue Plan, a stimulus bill passed by Congress in 2021 that provided $303 million to help Wyoming schools mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the very top of the school district’s website has a link to a “Social/Mental Wellness” page, which can connect members of the school community to multiple new resources. “They’re very easy for any staff member or any family to access these sup...
One summer during my college years, I had a roommate who suffered from suicidal thoughts. She’d attempted suicide before we met, and been hospitalized, but continued to struggle. Back in the late 80s, there was very little public understanding of mental health issues, and the stigma was even stronger than it is today. Our other roommate and I didn’t know what to do, or where to turn. Not surprisingly, we didn’t handle it well. However, we did one thing right: we restricted access to lethal means. We secured the knives, and took control of her m...

Amid the Rock Springs Young at Heart’s ongoing lawsuit to recover more than $1 million it claimed its former executive director embezzled from the organization, Sweetwater County Commissioner Roy Lloyd said the county should exercise greater oversight on the grant-funding it provides to local organizations. The discussion came during Tuesday’s commission meeting, in which the county approved a grant contract for RSYAH worth $222,000, a sum the county had already appropriated for the senior center when it filed its lawsuit in July regarding the...
ExxonMobil has received a federal permit to inject CO2 for permanent underground storage below public Bureau of Land Management property in southwest Wyoming. The company will inject up to 60 million cubic feet of CO2 per day from its Shute Creek natural gas processing facility near La Barge, according to the BLM. The greenhouse gas will be stored in a briny portion of the Madison Aquifer some 18,000 feet below the surface in an area that straddles the border between Lincoln and Sweetwater counties. The permit is a first-of-its-kind for the...
POWELL- The family of Thomas "TG" Howard wanted to make sure they didn't hide his mental illness and depression, listing it as his cause of death in his obituaries. It was important to find a positive in the unthinkably hard reality of how he died. Howard took his own life Christmas day, 2015. The popular athlete at Cody High School who joined the Navy after graduation had first turned to alcohol and then opiates in an effort to deal with his mental illness. "A lot of people that struggle with m...
A handful of voters in Sweetwater County will decide in November whether the Little Snake River Conservation District will assess up to 1 mill on lands within its newly expanded boundaries, which now span millions of acres across the eastern half of the county. The district already assesses a mill within its Carbon County boundaries. Little Snake River's new territory includes ample industry-heavy areas in Sweetwater County and, if the mill levy were passed, the bulk of revenue would come from a...
Labor Day is a day to celebrate the workers who keep our country running. They’re the ones who keep our businesses open and our economy strong. However, as I’ve visited policymakers, business owners and workers throughout the state, one question invariably pops up: Where have all the workers gone? We’ve all heard the phrases “the Great Resignation,” “quiet quitting,” “boomeranging,” “gig workers,” and other new terms to describe a new workforce and workplace. But what does this mean to businesses clamoring for help and workers still looking...
SHERIDAN — At least one bill designed to increase liquor license availability in Wyoming is moving forward to the 2023 legislative session, with others potentially on the way. One of those bills was forwarded to the legislative session while two others were advanced to the committee’s next meeting for further discussion. The fourth bill was killed by the committee. The b...
Wyoming Game and Fish Department - in cooperation with several private landowners - has established a new walk-in hunting and fishing area (Sweetwater #3) along the Green River. Historically, the private landowners allowed access to their property by sportsmen for hunting and fishing. Problems with littering, camping, and abandoning property on those private lands have resulted in the private landowners working with the department to regulate activities on those private properties by enrolling...

The top three candidates from the Republican primary advance to the general election, where they...

A local taxidermist has been ordered to pay restitution to several clients following an investigation by Wyoming Game and Fish Department Game Wardens. There have been some serious things to come before the board; he makes it look so easy." Jones described the last three years as interesting and...
